About the Therapist

My name is Risa Hobson, and I am a daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, therapist, and educator. Originally from California, I grew up in Germany, and came to Portland over a decade ago via Nevada and Michigan.

I believe that all individuals have the inner strength and ability to become self-aware, to make healthy changes based on realistic goals, to relate effectively with others, and to be purposeful and contributing members of their family and community. I strive towards these ideals in my own daily life, and hope to walk along side my clients as they do the same.

I obtained my BA from Calvin College in 1997 with a major in cross-cultural studies and a minor in sociology. With a deep desire to learn more and better equip myself for working with others, I returned to school in 2001 and obtained my MA in counseling from Western Seminary. I continue my education in an on-going manner, reading most anything I can get my hands on, and participating in a variety of training and professional development opportunities.

I have over 13 years of experience in a variety of mental health settings, and am a certified Prepare/Enrich couples counselor. In addition to owning my own practice, I am privileged to be a college professor, learning along with my students about Psychology and Human Development.

Besides getting to do what I am passionate about for a living, I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, being out-doors, being creative, and traveling when I get the chance.
