About the Therapist

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about my counseling practice. I have been living in Portland for more than a decade now and continue to live in awe of the beauty, diversity, and creativity of the pacific northwest. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree from Calvin College with a major in cross-cultural studies and a minor in sociology.  I graduated with high honors from Western Seminary with a Master of Arts degree in Counseling. I have over ten years professional counseling experience in a variety of settings including group practice, community mental health, school counseling, residential treatment, and non-profit organizations. I am also working towards licensure in the state of Oregon, have specialized training in the Prepare/Enrich couples counseling program, and speak fluent German.

As a therapist, I believe that all individuals have the inner strength and ability to become self-aware, to make healthy changes based on realistic goals, to relate effectively with others, and to be purposeful and contributing members of their family and community. I view counseling as an active and committed process of change lead by each person’s unique strengths and needs. While counseling may at times be difficult and challenging, I strive to provide a compassionate and creative environment to help each person move forward on their path towards healing and balance.

If you are ready to start this process of change, I look forward to joining you on your path.

Risa Hobson, M.A.
